ABOUT JOHN SYME
Until 2019, John was General Counsel to the Commissioner of Competition / Competition Bureau and represented the Commissioner in a number of precedent-setting Competition Act matters before the Competition Tribunal, the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Canada, including in the advertising and marketing area.
John also provided counsel to the Commissioner / Bureau in numerous non-litigated advertising/marketing (retail, online, social media), merger (telecom, energy, broadcasting), abuse of dominance and competitor collaboration (eBooks) matters.

In addition, John represented the Attorney General of Canada in several significant litigated matters including under the Investment Canada Act (foreign investment), the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada Act (banking disclosure), the Food and Drugs Act (pharmaceuticals) and the Customs Act (trade).
Since starting his practice in 2019, John has provided competition and marketing/advertising counsel to a range of public and private sector clients, including Commissioner of Competition/Competition Bureau, an online marketer of nutritional supplements, a leading Canadian internet service provider, a software firm, and hedge funds and other financial entities
seeking to understand the merger review process under the Competition Act. In addition, John has provided administrative law advice to a federal economic regulator and assisted a foreign competition law authority in implementing a new merger review regime.
